New Zealand Bloodstock To Conduct Innovative Ashwell Farm Foal Sale

17 February 2003

Ashwell Farm principal, Ray Knight today announced that he will be selling his entire 2002 foal crop in an on-farm sale to be conducted by New Zealand Bloodstock.
Knight has traditionally sold his best weanlings at New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling & Broodmare Sale in May. In a departure from this policy, Ray has decided to sell his entire 2002 foal crop in an on-farm sale, modelled on the same format which is used so successfully in Japan and which see the foals offered for sale still on their mothers.
The foals will be weaned by Ashwell Farm immediately after the sale and be available for delivery 14 days later. In a further goodwill gesture to buyers, Ashwell Farm will insure the foals at its cost through New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance for the weaning period.
This sale gives Ashwell Farm an opportunity to show our stallions, present the very impressive first crop foals by our resident sire D'Cash, host and entertain loyal clients and of course to present our entire 2002 foal crop for sale, in their home environment," was the comment from Ray Knight.
The Ashwell Farm Foal Sale will be conducted by New Zealand Bloodstock Ltd on Sunday March 9. The event commences at 4pm with drinks on arrival and a Stallion Parade featuring the farm's resident sires, Shinko King (Fairy King x Rose of Jericho) who has made such a brilliant start to his stud career, Kingfisher Mill (Riverman x Charming Life), D'Cash (Danehill x Canny Lass) and Painted Black (Sunday Silence x Oak Tree).

The Ashwell Farm Foal Sale will follow the Stallion Parade and the hospitality will continue into the evening with a post-sale barbeque.

The sale will feature the impressive first crop foals of D'Cash, a young sire whose pedigree boasts several of the most prolific names in the Australasian studbook, being by Danehill, from a Group 1 winning Bletchingly half sister to Canny Lad. The sale will also feature foals by the very exciting young sire Shinko King, sire of this season's Group 1 NZ Oaks winner Bramble Rose.

Foals by Fly to the Stars (a Group 1 Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes winning son of Bluebird), Kingfisher Mill, and Faltaat will also be offered.

Some of the highlights of the sale include the foal half sister by Fly to the Stars to the Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1 place getter Travellin' Man (Blues Traveller x Peat). There is also a filly by Fly to the Stars from one of the best race mares of her time in NZ, Balinchy (Lord Ballina x Chinky), winner of 12 races including 3 at Group 2 & 3 level.

In addition to the foals a number of quality Broodmares, several of them in foal as well as Yearlings and 2YOs will go under the hammer making a total catalogue of 37 Lots.

Catalogues will be available through New Zealand Bloodstock from 19 February.
