NZ Breds Dominate at Sha Tin

For the second weekend in a row, New Zealand bred horses dominated at Sha Tin with five winners from the ten-race card:

  • The feature race of the day, the Class 1 HK$1.6m Changchun Handicap (1600m), saw seasoned campaigner, Cheeky (NZ) (O'Reilly x Sound Lover) make the step up in class with his third consecutive win for trainer, Caspar Fownes, and owner, Cynthia Pong Hong Siu Chu. Cheeky was purchased from the 2000 Premier Sale at Karaka for NZ$230,000.
  • Happee Owner (NZ) (Towkay x Make Up) took home the Class 2 event of the meeting, the HK$1m Chinese Recreation Club Challenge Cup (1400m). Previously racing in New Zealand as Ambitious Owner, Happee Owner won the Group 1 Levin Classic and ran second in the Group 1 2000 Guineas last season.
  • The hotly contested Race 8 was won by Winning Bullet (NZ) (Zabeel x Celebrant), a NZ$240,000 purchase from the 2003 Premier Sale at Karaka. This was Winning Bullet's second start in Hong Kong for trainer, John Size. Third placegetter Calcando (NZ) (Cape Cross x Wild Blue) was a NZ$180,000 purchase from last year's NZ Ready to Run Sale.
  • Race 5 saw New Zealand bred, Electronics Spur (NZ) (Flying Spur x Hasty Bird) win the Class 3 Guilin Handicap (1400m) for Tony Cruz. A previous winner in Australia, Electronics Spur was purchased by Dan O'Donnell for NZ$120,000 from Karaka.
  • Race 2 claimed the first New Zealand bred victory of the day with Peach Blossom (NZ) (Centaine x Bali Hi) winning the Class 5 event for trainer, Tony Millard. The 5YO gelding was purchased from Waikato Stud at New Zealand Bloodstock's Select Sale for NZ$37,500.
