Perfect Chaos (NZ) Another Black-Type NZB Graduate for Marsh and Johnson

Stephen Marsh and Dylan Johnson have had an outstanding run with fillies sourced from NZB Sales, and they celebrated another new black-type winner on Saturday with Perfect Chaos (NZ) (Hello Youmzain) in the $80,000 Listed HS Dyke Wanganui Guineas (1200m).

Perfect Chaos was bred by The Oaks Stud, who offered her in Book 1 of Karaka 2025. Stephen Marsh Racing and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock bought her for $50,000. Her five-start career has now produced a black-type win, four placings and $62,680 in stakes.

Saturday’s Listed success saw Perfect Chaos follow in the footsteps of other NZB-sourced stablemates that had been bought by Marsh and Johnson, such as last season’s superstar filly Well Written (Written Tycoon) and fellow stakes-winning fillies Hitabell (NZ) (Embellish), Glamour Tycoon (Written Tycoon) and Bourbon Empress (NZ) (Proisir).

“This filly’s form at two was impeccable, and she’s a filly that we didn’t pay a hell of a lot of money for,” Johnson said on Saturday. “She’s by Hello Youmzain, who’s really kicking a few goals, while she’s well-bred on her dam side. To get valuable black type in the spring of your three-year-old season is outstanding.”

A daughter of the Group Three winner Kali (NZ) (Darci Brahma), the Marsh-trained Perfect Chaos began her career as a two-year-old with placings in all of her four starts. She was competing against the likes of subsequent stakes performers Honour Roll (NZ) (Savabeel), Belle Rebelle (NZ) (Ribchester), Bourbon Time (Exceed And Excel) and Phillyjean (NZ) (Hello Youmzain), along with highly impressive debut winner System Of Play (Ole Kirk).

A close second in a trial leading into her three-year-old debut, Perfect Chaos stepped out on Saturday as a warm $3.20 favourite for the Guineas.

After sitting on the outside of the leader up to the home turn, jockey George Rooke pushed the button at the top of the straight and Perfect Chaos pounced and took command. She went on to win by just under a length from the late-finishing O’Baby (NZ) (Ardrossan) and Singletary (NZ) (Satono Aladdin).

“She looked fantastic before the race, having had only the one trial,” Rooke said. “I thought being fresh-up on heavy ground might be the only problem, but she jumps and puts herself there in any race. She’s got plenty of natural speed.

“We got a decent enough breather, and then as long as she got through the ground, I thought she was always going to be hard to beat. That was the case.

“I actually thought we might have done a bit too much to get up outside the leader, especially after only the one trial, but she was in great nick and was ready to go today.

“I think she’ll be even better on a drier track. She’s a great-moving filly. You’ll see the best of her when she gets on a Soft5 or Good4.”

Representing the Marsh stable on course at Wanganui, Johnson was equally impressed by Saturday’s performance.

“George gave her a top ride,” he said. “We wanted to be positive early and take luck out of it. She travelled beautifully throughout. After doing a bit of early work, she could have been a bit of a sitting duck and been vulnerable late, but I’m thrilled to get this result for the big ownership team.

“She travelled down here beautifully, and physically she has just continued to mature, she’s taken the steps from that two-year-old campaign to now, and she’s is a lovely horse to do anything with.

“She is nominated for the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Group One, 1600m) so we would like to get her out to 1400 metres in time. But we have the runs on the board now, and valuable black type, and we can plot our way through to Christchurch.”

This was the second straight year that the Wanganui Guineas has been won by a Hello Youmzain filly purchased at Karaka, with Perfect Chaos following on from last year’s winner Platinum Diamond (NZ) (Hello Youmzain).

This year’s Guineas produced an NZB trifecta. Runner-up O’Baby was bought for $80,000 from Book 1 of Karaka 2025 while Singletary was a $125,000 purchase from Book 2 of Karaka 2025.
