Plenty of Opportunities in Jamison Draft

21 April 2010

A change of direction sees Otaki-based breeder Tom Jamison offering a quality draft at NZB's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka from 3 - 5 May.

The successful co-breeder of top Hong Kong galloper Armada (Towkay) - winner of the HKJC Stewards' Cup and second in the Group 1 HKJC Champions Mile and Tokyo Yasuda Kinen - and the Group 2 New Zealand Cup winner Pentathon (Pentire), Jamison's current pride and joy is the exciting staying filly A Chance to Dream (Volksraad). A winner of the Listed Sunline Vase (2100m) and fifth placed in the New Zealand Oaks, trainer John Sargent is now setting the three-year-old for a trip to Queensland for the Oaks.

Despite his continuing success, Jamison says it's time for his breeding interests to take a back seat in favour of time away from the farm.

"The horses are a hobby that's gotten out of hand and at this stage of our life my wife and I would like to spend some time travelling, but with the horses we're tied to the farm 24/7."

Jamison's 37 entries are all set to be offered on an unreserved basis. This includes 13 weanlings, 19 broodmares, one yearling, three two-year-olds plus an unraced filly by Shinko King at Lot 865 from the Straight Strike mare Sustrike.

Straight Strike is the damsire of the likes of Lonhro and up-and-coming stakes winning mares Jessicabeel (Zabeel) and St Germaine (Keeper), while Shinko King is the sire of Group 1 winning mares in Eskimo Queen and Bramble Rose.

A tidy list of sires are represented in the weanling offering with youngsters by Darci Brahma, Elusive City, Falkirk, King's Chapel, Handsome Ransom, Pentire, Perfectly Ready, Shinko King and Spartacus.

A similar list also features as the covering sires of the broodmares with the addition of Faltaat and first season sires Alamosa and Sakhee's Secret.

The broodmare selection includes:

Lot 535, a half-sister to Hulastrike (Straight Strike) and Yamanin Vital (Sir Tristram). No Hula No Dance is by Rhythm and is currently empty allowing for an early service this year.

Lot 557, Pinders Prize (Prized) is a half-sister to champion stayer Pentathon and is in foal to The Oaks Stud's Sakhee's Secret. The young son of Arc de Triomphe winner Sakhee was the champion European sprinter of 2007, winning the prestigious Group 1 Newmarket July Cup.

Lot 570, in foal to Shinko King, Raise the Roof (Maroof) at is from a stakes-winning half-sister to champion South African filly Petrava. Petrava's daughter Hoeberg, also by Maroof, followed in her mother's footsteps to also be crowned the top filly in South Africa.

Lot 690, the winning mare Brockovich is the dam of handy dual stakes winner Nosmo King. She was not served last spring.

Lot 750, Evening Star's (Sir Tristram) dam is out of the outstanding broodmare in Diamond Lover making her a sister to Tristalove and a three-quarter sister to Don Eduardo. Evening Star is in foal to Alamosa and her Redoute's Choice daughter Halleys is currently well-regarded in the Bart Cummings stable.

Lot 770, Great Joy is a half-sister to Group 1 Victoria Derby winner Hit The Roof (Maroof) and is in foal to Wellfield Lodge's Alamosa. Jamison reported that her half-brother by Redoute's Choice is trained by Mark Kavanagh and is set for a Queensland Carnival assault, which could prove lucrative to the pedigree.

Last Tycoon (Lot 800), Grand Lodge (Lot 770) and Marscay (Lot 786) all feature as broodmare sires and are currently in the top ten broodmare sires in Australia.

Two mares are entered by Champion NZ sire Volksraad at Lots 594 and 656 while Australia's Champion sire Encosta de Lago is represented by Lot 772. Halloween is from the Group 1 VATC Blue Diamond Stakes winner La Lagune (Danehill) and is in foal to Sakhee's Secret.
