Rising Star Sires Feature at NZB Ready to Run

9 November 2011

New Zealand Bloodstock's Ready to Run Sale next week offers a unique opportunity to secure the progeny of a number of promising young kiwi sires that are bursting into the headlines.

A notable example is that of Waikato Stud's Cox Plate winner Savabeel. The sire son of Zabeel has some talented black-type winners to his name including Tullamore, Strike the Stars, Dowager Queen and Scarlett Lady. Savabeel sired his second Group 1 winner this spring with his son, the Ready to Run graduate Sangster, winning the prestigious A$1.5 million Group 1 VRC Derby.

The sire of 11 stakes winners from four crops, Savabeel is currently sitting in sixth place on Australia's Sires' Premiership (by earnings) with just 58 runners this season. With the exception of Dunaden's sire Nicobar, the four sires above him - Redoute's Choice, Fastnet Rock, Reset and Elusive Quality - currently average 121 runners each, highlighting the success of his Australian season thus far.

Savabeel has 14 two-year-olds in the Ready to Run Sale including:

  • Six in Casey & Michelle Dando's Bradbury Park draft, including a colt from the Group 3 winner Sustaad (Kaapstad) at Lot 336, and the half-sister to the Group 1 placed two-year-old Manten (Encosta de Lago) from the stakes winning mare Dazzling Belle (Desert Sun) at Lot 92.
  • Lot 282 from Oxford Thoroughbreds, the colt from the Group 3 winning mare Rhysess (Pins) who holds a nomination for the Golden Slipper.

A five-time Group 1 winning son of Danehill, Darci Brahma currently heads New Zealand's Sires' Premiership for 3YO winners with a current tally of six. The sire of two stakes winners from his first crop, his son Darci be Good has been a standout in Australia winning the Listed Fernhill Handicap at two and the Group 3 Spring Stakes this season. He also ran second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at his last start.

277

Lot 277, the half-brother to the Group 1 winner
Vouvray by Darci Brahma.

In New Zealand his progeny are headlined by the promising filly Artistic who won the Listed Bonecrusher Stakes and is among the leading contenders for this weekend's Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas. In Singapore, Super Easy is also firing on all cylinders being unbeaten in four starts. His latest win in the Open Class Kranji Stakes (1200m) saw him run the final 600 metres in a super quick 33.32 seconds.

Darci Brahma has an outstanding selection of 11 two-year-olds in the Sale including:

  • Curraghmore Stud's colt at Lot 11, the half-brother to the Group 1 winner Veloce Bella (Volksraad).
  • Lot 277 from Mana Park, the half-brother to the Group 1 Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray (Zabeel) from the Group 2 winning mare Real Success (Success Express).
  • Siblings to the Group 3 winner Grand Dancer (No Excuse Needed) (Lot 74) and stakes winners Bridgestone (Pentire) (Lot 146) and Mirandola (O'Reilly) (Lot 248).

Windsor Park's Group 1 winning sire Thorn Park had an outstanding 2010/11 season through the deeds of his star performers Jimmy Choux, The Party Stand and Veyron. Thorn Park was the only stallion in Australasia last season to sire three individual Group 1 winners. He also made history with his domestic progeny earning over $3 million, a New Zealand record, handing him the title of New Zealand's Champion Sire.

A descendant of the prolific broodmare Denise's Joy (Seventh Hussar), Thorn Park currently leads New Zealand's Sires' Premiership (by earnings) with his brilliant son Jimmy Choux winning the Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Spring Classic and Group 1 Windsor Park Plate.

He has seven two-year-olds in the Sale including:

  • Esker Lodge's colt at Lot 308 from the multiple stakes winning mare Sheka (Sandtrap).
  • Lot 70 from Windsor Park Stud, the colt from Chile (Volksraad), a sister to the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Dantelah. An eight-time New Zealand Champion Sire, Volksraad is the damsire of 17 stakes winners including Beauty Flash (Golan) and Lights of Heaven (Zabeel).

A brilliant sprinter who competed on the international stage, Falkirk is the sire of some promising types, with his progeny showing a good deal of potential in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong.

348

Lot 348, the half-brother to the Group 2 winner Centennial Park and Group 3 winner Ballack by Falkirk.

Durham Town is one of Falkirk's leading sons in New Zealand at present and looks to be a very promising horse, winning four of his six starts. Hong Kong trainer Casper Fownes also looks to have a promising type in Best City who has put together back-to-back victories at Sha Tin. Best City has a close relation in the Ready to Run Sale also by Falkirk at Lot 77 from Regal Farm.

In Australia, Falkirk has had just 10 runners, eight of which have won on the track, with his four-year-old daughter Aqualin unbeaten in three starts. Falkirk has seven entries in the Ready to Run Sale including:

  • Windsor Park Stud's colt at Lot 348, the half-brother to the current performer and Group 2 winner Centennial Park (Thorn Park) and Group 3 winner Ballack (Montjeu). The colt is from the Last Tycoon mare Trephina, the same family as Group 1 winner Laisserfaire (Danehill) and the stakes winner and sire Foreplay (Danehill).
  • The gelding from Dubai Century (Military Plume) at Lot 105, to be offered by J.W. Campin. Dubai Century is a half-sister to the stakes placed Nicola Lass (Scenic), the dam of Group 1 winner Niconero (Danzero) and dual Group 1 winner and sire Nicconi (Bianconi).

Other promising up-and-coming or first season sires with progeny in next week's Ready to Run Sale include Any Suggestion, Bernardini, Casino Prince, Coats Choice, Excellent Art, Fast 'n' Famous, Hard Spun, Husson, Iffraaj, Librettist, Nadeem, Patapan, Perfectly Ready, Red Clubs, Shaft, Snitzel, Strada, Street Sense, Written Tycoon and Zizou.
