Selwyn River Stud Unreserved Dispersal

22 February 2010

New Zealand Bloodstock is set to conduct the Selwyn River Stud Unreserved Dispersal Sale on Friday 26 March.

To be held on the Selwyn River property in Ellesmere, Christchurch, the Sale marks a new direction for Selwyn River Stud proprietor Glyn Morris who has been amongst the leading South Island breeders over the past decade.

"I have spent more than 20 years breeding and racing horses and have had immense enjoyment from doing so", commented Morris.

"I believeit is always important to reassess the way that you do business and this yearI have decided to move away from holding a substantial broodmare band of my own."

"By removingthe competing demands that are created by so many broodmares and young stock I can focus on providing higher quality stud services to breeders and owners who can see the immense potential that I believe exists when they choose to breed their mare with Edenwold", Morris concluded.

The Sale is set to comprise 70 lots including 22 weanlings, 30 broodmares (11 with foals at foot), 15 yearlings, and 3 broken-in two-year-olds.

Underpinning the attractiveness of the Sale for pin-hookers, traders, trainers, owners, and bloodstock investors is Selwyn River Stud's young stallion prospect Edenwold (Southern Halo x Best of Friends, by Mining).

The Champion Canadian 2YO of his year, Edenwold won four races as a juvenile, three of these in Canada's most prestigious juvenile events including the Simcoe Stakes (1400m), the Vandal Stakes (1200m), and the Colin Stakes (1200m). The class of Canadian juvenile racing was on show to the world as recently as last season when2008 Champion Canadian juvenile Mine That Bird travelled to Americaand claimed the 2009 Kentucky Derby in scintillating fashion.

Edenwold, in his classic year, returned to win the most prestigious race in Canada - The Queen's Plate (2000m) - often described as 'Canada's Kentucky Derby'. In winning, Edenwold distinguished himself as the first Champion 2YO since 1977 to later come out and win what is the oldest thoroughbred race in North America (Queens Plate).

Interestingly the last to accomplish the feat was none other than Sound Reason, later a leading New Zealand sire who was crowned champion in the 1987-88 season with his best progeny including top juveniles like Moonshine, classic winners like Candide and Cologne, and Cups horses like Senator and Soundoration. Northern Dancer is another who won the Queen's Plate before leaving his legacy in global thoroughbred racing and breeding.

Earning close to US$1,000,000 Edenwold's racetrack ability is no fluke if you have a look at his credentials. An imposing and masculine individual standing 16.1hh, Edenwold, like More Than Ready, is by Southern Halo out of a Mr. Prospector line mare. More Than Ready is out of a Woodman (Mr. Prospector x Playmate, by Buckpasser) mare, and Edenwold out of a Mining (Mr. Prospector x I Pass, by Buckpasser) mare.

The similarities do not end there with More Than Ready also winning US$1,000,000 on the racetrack with five wins as a juvenile before staking Group 1 success in his classic year.

The chance to secure Edenwold stock is immense at the Selwyn River Stud Sale with 14 weanlings from his first crop set for the auction and 25 broodmares covered by Edenwold for sale, along with 8 foals at foot.

The weanlings include Lot 4, a filly out of dual Listed winner Marjie Marjie (Khozaam); Lot 10, a half-sister to Singapore stakes-placed Music Master; Lot 14, a colt out of a half-sister to the dam of Andrew Scott's leading Group 1 Telecom NZ Derby hope Corporal Jones; and Lot 22, half-brother to impressive five time Macau winner The Eighth Cat.

Mares by the likes of Zabeel, Pentire, Royal Academy, Dance Floor, and Danasinga, will be offered in-foal to Edenwold, with 8 mares selling with Edenwold foals at foot.

Edenwold's first crop of foals have impressed breeders with the son of Southern Halo really stamping his stock.

"They carry quite a bit of condition but have lovely scope to them," commented Morris.

"Edenwold's natural muscle and strength has certainly been passed on and I look forward to offering his quality first crop in March, they really are something I am proud of andI look forward to them developing into fine racehorses."

Taking advantage of the local auction opportunity, Alan Jones and Edwina Morris' Berkley Stud will also offer a small selection of horses at the Dispersal Sale.

Berkley will offer progeny by My Halo (5), Coat's Choice (2), and Spartacus (1), as well as three mares with foals at foot by My Halo (1), Danske (1), and Coat's Choice (1).

Following on from the weanlings and broodmares will be 15 yearlings, 10 of these well-grown colts, which will create plenty of interest for trainers and traders. Sires include Lord of Warriors, Spectatorial, My Halo, and Coat's Choice.

Three broken-in, untried, two-year-old fillies will conclude the sale, offering buyers a chance to be racing in no time, with a special highlight at Lot 69, a half-sister to Group 1 Levin Classic winner Bunker.
