Solid Start to NZB National Weanling & Broodmare Sale

2 May 2011

It was a steady day's trade today at Karaka, with good demand for the first of the 370 weanlings placing figures ahead of last year on Day 1 of New Zealand Bloodstock's 2011 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale.

With 170 weanlings sold so far, the average is currently 16% ahead of last year at $13,429 (compared with a Day 1 average of $11,529 in 2010), at a clearance rate of 74%, matching last year at the same point in the Sale. Turnover is currently $2,283,000 with 100 weanlings catalogued for sale tomorrow.

On the eve of kiwi champion So You Think's European debut - a timely reminder of the merits of his star sire - it was no surprise that High Chaparral's progeny should feature prominently at the Sale, providing three of the top four prices of the day.

The top price came at Lot 125 with Brighthill Farm's colt from the unraced Mi Preferido mare Bibi Maizoon fetching $170,000 to the bid of Tim Bodle's Whakanui Stud.

The second top price was $165,000 paid by Auckland-based bloodstock agent Paul Willetts for the High Chaparral colt from the Pompeii Court mare Sweet Geisha (Lot 56), bought for a syndicate of Victorian owners which includes Richard Pegum.

Offered by Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud, the result helped to place Curraghmore Stud at the top of the vendor tables by both average and aggregate for the day, and on track to be the leading vendor at this session for the sixth year in a row.

With six weanlings still to be offered tomorrow, Gordon is delighted with how the Sale is progressing.

"We've always considered this sale as a very viable commercial option for our clients and again today that's proven to be the case," he remarked.

"We had a smaller draft than normal this year but the interest before the sale has been consistent with previous years and again we achieved really good prices for the obvious horses."

"Both our top lots were bought by Australian interests so it's again very encouraging to see that demand for our horses coming from Australia."

Curraghmore's Pentire filly at Lot 219 - the three-quarter sister to Zarita from Gin City (Herocity) -  was the third top price of the day at $130,000, and one of three purchases made by the day's leading buyer, Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock.

Dormello Stud's Unreserved Dispersal Sale provided the most entries through the ring today, with 20 of 119 sold so far. These included one of the top ten lots, the three-quarter brother to Maldivian by Savabeel that fetched $90,000 (Lot 33).

No doubt a fan of the sire following victory by his Savabeel filly Scarlett Lady in the Group 2 Travis Stakes on Saturday, Sydney-based owner Max Whitby was the purchaser. An active figure at Karaka throughout the day, he has signed for 11 purchases so far for $133,200.

The weanling session will continue tomorrow with Lots 271 to 370, immediately followed by the Supplementary weanling entries. This will be followed by the new Horses-in-Training session and the first of the 297 broodmares. The Sale can be viewed live online at ww.nzb.co.nz from 10am tomorrow.
