Spring Sale Preview

19 July 2005

Following hot on the heels of the South Island Sale and Mercedes Awards night on 12th August is the annual Spring Bloodstock Sale at Karaka on Sunday 21st August.

This year sees a small and select catalogue of 169 entries. This is comprised of 110 broodmares, 31 yearlings, 12 two year olds, 8 untried horses, 6 racehorses and 2 stallion shares. Included in this year's catalogue is also 14 mares offered by Fayette Park Stud as part of David & Masey Benjamin's complete broodmare dispersal.

This year will see broodmares offered in foal to such sires as Align, Dagger's Drawn, Danasinga, Danroad, Don Eduardo, Ekraar, Elusive City, Howbaddouwantit, Jungle Pocket, Keeper, Montjeu, No Excuse Needed, O'Reilly, Postponed, Storm Creek, Stravinsky, Thorn Park, Viking Ruler and many more.

The timing of the Spring Sale is opportune for buying breeding stock for the new season and the Sale has proved in the past to offer some top class mares. For example, the dam of dual Group 1 winner, Final Destination, the dam of stakes winner, Society Beau, have both been purchased from this Sale.

Last year's top priced mare was Special Sal (by Alzao) sold by Fayette Park Stud to Robert Coleman's Ultra Thoroughbred Racing for $140,000. Special Sal is from three-time Group 1 winning mare, Special (Habituate), and is herself the dam of stakes performers Demographic and Chalonnaise.

This is the last time that the Spring Sale will be conducted at Karaka as New Zealand Bloodstock's new sales calendar next year will see the National Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale held in its place on 24 & 25 July 2006.

The Spring Sale will be conducted at Karaka on 21 August and catalogues will be available from 20 July. To request catalogues contact [email protected] or view all pedigrees online at www.nzb.co.nz from 20 July.
