Super Day of Selling at Inaugural NZB National Weanling Sale

7 May 2006

The change of format paid off for New Zealand Bloodstock at today's National Weanling Sale at Karaka, with buoyant results recorded at the inaugural stand-alone Sale.

Marketing & PR Manager, Petrea Vela, commented "It was a great day of selling at Karaka today. There were plenty of buyers ringside and good competition forgood qualitylots. There's a definite feeling that people are encouraged by the imminent changes to New Zealand's industry, with a predominantly local buying benchbidding and buying with confidence. We arevery pleased thatthe new formathas proveda success and has provided the ideal foundation for us to build on in the future."

From 271 lots catalogued for sale, 202 were sold for an average of NZ$11,406, an aggregate of NZ$2,304,000 and a very healthy clearance rate of 84%. Last year's Weanling Session at the National Broodmare, Weanling & Mixed Bloodstock Sale recorded a combined weanling average of NZ$8,345, representing a 37% increase this year. Similarly last year's median has leapt 107% to NZ$6,000.The turnover has increased by 17% for 34 fewer horses sold.

The standout story of the day was Waikato vendor, Curraghmore Stud, who accounted forsix of the top12 lots of the Sale. Top price was paid by Mark & Shelley Treweek of Lyndhurst Farm, whoparted withNZ$150,000 for a colt by Galileo from Last Tycoon mare, Liberty Song.

Mark Treweek was very happy with his purchase: "The colt [Lot 218] was very well conformed and stood out as the best in the Sale. I think Galileo has a huge chance of success, already the leading first crop sire in Australia, after a great start in Europe also. We thought we would have to pay too much for a colt like this in Australia, so we are very happy to have secured him at this price to put him through the Premier Sale at Karakanext January."

Curraghmore Stud principal, Gordon Cunningham, was delighted with the results. "We were happy withthe quality of our draft leading into this Sale, and are thrilled that the format proved to be a success and did justice to those horses. I have always felt that the weanling market has the potential to become a much stronger trading vehicle for breeders in New Zealand and our results today endorse that."

This is the first year a stand-alone weanling Sale has been conducted at Karaka.Last year's weanling session comprised part ofNew Zealand Bloodstock'sNational Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale. This year broodmaresand mixed bloodstock will be offered in the National Sale in August.
