Supreme Heights (NZ) Strikes Again in Breeders’ Stakes

11 October 2020

Supreme Heights (NZ) claims consecutive
Group Three victory.

Passed in at the 2017 Festival Sale at Karaka, Supreme Heights (NZ) (Jimmy Choux) is a now a back-to-back winner at Group Three level.

Supreme Heights added Saturday’s $70,000 Group Three Wyndspelle Grangewilliam Stud Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) to her last-start victory in the $70,000 Group Three NZB Ready to Run Sale Trainers Series (1400m). The quality mare has now won seven of her 16 starts and earned $164,685 in stakes.

Ridden on Saturday by Michael McNab, Supreme Heights led throughout the fillies and mares’ feature and produced a fierce kick when challenged in the straight. She was briefly headed but fought back to reclaim the lead and score a determined victory by a neck.

“The instructions were to ride her like last time, where she led and dictated, but to also be prepared to take a sit if something wanted to go mad in front,” McNab said. “I ended up getting a soft lead and she got into such a nice rhythm.

“I thought we were travelling well, but when I saw Kiwi Ida (Squamosa) come up to me, I asked her and she just found another gear. She’s a tough little horse and a pleasure to ride, so I’m delighted I could get on her.

“That’s the first time I’ve ridden her, but with the attitude she has and the will to win, I can’t see why she wouldn’t go on to win more races.”

Supreme Heights is trained at Matamata by Mark Brosnan. The five-year-old is raced by her breeders, Bill and Jane Ewen, Paul Culpan and Meredith Reid, in partnership with Brian Leach, Fred McCauley, Wally Niederer, Steve Bignall, Johnny Duffin and Doug Marra.

Numerous black-type stars have come from all levels of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales Series, and buyers will have another chance to strike gold at Karaka 2021. Book 1 will run across three days from Sunday 24 January, followed immediately by Book 2 from Wednesday 27 through to Friday 29 January.
