Karaka graduate Maygrove (Authorized) has earned his owners more than three times his purchase price, and he picked up the third stakes win of his career in Saturday’s $50,000 Listed Jakkalberry Classic (1950m) at Rotorua.

Ridden by Michael Coleman for trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, Maygrove came from well back in the field to hit the lead at the top of the straight and race away. Gentil Tonton (Yeats) gave chase in the last 200 metres but Maygrove was too good, scoring by a length and a quarter.

“He’s a very good horse,” Coleman said. “He’s been consistent all the way through, especially on left-handed tracks.”

Maygrove has now had 36 starts for seven wins, 10 placings and more than $340,000 in prize-money. He won the Group 2 Wellington Cup (2400m) in 2015 and the Group 2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m) earlier this year.

He has also placed in the Listed Marton Cup (2200m) and run fourth in the Group 3 Bart Cummings (2500m), Geelong Cup (2400m) and Bendigo Cup (2400m).

Maygrove was bred by the Laurel Oak Lady Zhivago Syndicate and is out of the Zabeel mare Lady Zhivago (NZ), who won three races and is a three-quarter sister to the stakes winner Zaza (NZ) (Zabeel).

Offered by Haunui Farm at the 2012 Select Sale, Maygrove was purchased by Bruce Perry Bloodstock for $110,000.
