Trusting Trounces Older Rivals

24 August 2009

New Zealand Bloodstock graduate Trusting, a spring three year old, showed brilliancein defeating Group 2 weight-for-age company at just his third start at Randwick on Saturday.

As the only three year old in the Group 2 AJC Warwick Stakes, Trusting (Tale of the Cat x Legible, by Zabeel) became the first of his age group to win the 1400m contest since Lonhro in 2001, while Sunline scored as a four-year-old in 1999, with both going on to win more than $15 million in prize-money and 24 Group 1 races between them.

Racing in the blue, yellow, and green of Patinack Farm, Trusting jumped well for jockey Chris Munce who then elected to settle the colt back in the eleven horse field led out by Court Command.

In the straight it looked as though fellow Karaka graduate Mr Baritone (Stravinsky) and O'Lonhro would fight it out for first but Trusting erupted from centre track for Munce, relegating the duo to third and second respectively.

The rich bay colt was sold through the 2008 Karaka Premier Sale draft of Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud on behalf of Fairway Thoroughbreds, bringing $300,000 to the bid of Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm.

Trusting is the second foal of Group 2 Sandown Classic winner Legible (Zabeel) whose third foal isa two-year-old filly byEncosta De Lago, andin 2009 she is due tofoal down to Group 1 winning juvenile Holy Roman Emperor.

Legible's own dam Waihora's Lass (Tights) won at Group 2 level in the Auckland Breeders' Stakes making Trusting a third generation Group winner, with plenty more in store based on his recent performances.

Tale of the Cat

Interestingly the Tale of the Cat - Zabeel cross has already left Group 3winning sprinter Ubiquitous, while New Zealand's leading three-year-old colt of last season, Tell a Tale, is bred on the similar Tale of the Cat - Sir Tristram cross.

Patinack Farm have enjoyed considerable success on the racetrack in quick timeand their Karakapurchases haveperformied creditably with the likes of Linky Dink (Keeper) winning the 2009 Group 1 TJ Smith Classic, Marquardt (Shamardal) flashing home in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (second) and Group 1 Golden Slipper (sixth), and now Trusting completing 1400m in 1.21.59 to win the Group 2 AJC Warwick Stakes.

New Zealand Bloodstock now looks forward to the Spring Mixed Bloodstock Sale to be held at Karaka on 25 September.
