Unreserved Opportunities at NZB May Sale

4 May 2012

A number of appealing entries at next week's National Weanling & Broodmare Sale next week (7-9 May) are being offered on an unreserved basis, presenting some unbeatable opportunities for pinhookers and those looking for breeding prospects.

Heading the strong unreserved offering is Don McLaren's Northfields Stud which will be having an Unreserved Deplenishing Sale featuring 17 lots from his highly successful breeding operation based in Karaka.

A leading thoroughbred breeder, Don McLaren has bred seven individual Group 1 winners including the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas winner Zabrasive (Zabeel) and the outstanding performer Calveen. The daughter of Canny Lad produced a hat-trick of Group wins in 2005 in the Group 1 Easter Handicap, Group 2 Japan-New Zealand International Trophy and Group 2 Travis Stakes.

Northfields Stud will be offering seven weanlings in the Weanling session, highlighted by the High Chaparral colt from the Group 3 placed Stravinsky mare Soelin at Lot 311. The progeny of High Chaparral has been the subject of strong demand at recent yearling sales, with the sire averaging over $180,000 for 57 lots sold at the 2012 Karaka Yearling Sales. High Chaparral also had three colts sell at the 2011 May Sale averaging over $150,000, so an unreserved sale is promising buyers an outstanding opportunity.

Another feature of the draft and indeed the Weanling session is the Street Sense colt at Lot 63. An August 5th foal, the colt is from the Bluebird mare Blue Quail, a sister to the Group 1 Doomben Ten Thousand winner Flitter.

An outstanding racehorse, Street Sense won the Group 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile by 10 lengths and was the Eclipse Champion two-year-old colt in the USA. At three he added to his Group 1 tally when winning the Group 1 Kentucky Derby and Group 1 Travis Stakes.

Street Sense's first Southern Hemisphere crop are two-year-olds and sold well as yearlings at the 2011 yearling sales making up to $575,000 in the ring, with his second crop of yearlings making up to $210,000 this year. The son of Street Cry has sired three stakes winners in America in Group 3 winners Motor City and Castaway and Listed winner Street Life.

Blue Quail, dam of the $1.4 million colt Mullfit (Elusive Quality), will also be offered for unreserved sale at Lot 466. She has been served by Bel Esprit. Other weanling highlights from the Northfields Stud draft include:
