Wealth of Opportunities for Pinhookers at NZB Weanling Sale

2 May 2014

The upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale is not only a place to purchase a racetrack star, it also offers the opportunity to purchase a potential sale ring star.

May Sale 270

With the Sale average sitting just below $11,000 last year and 284 weanlings catalogued this year, there is plenty of opportunity for astute buyers to pinhook youngsters into next year’s yearling sales.

Leading weanling vendor for the past eight years, Curraghmore Stud has provided a host of pinhooking success for buyers at the National Weanling Sale:

  • At last year’s National Weanling Sale they sold a colt by first season sire Makfi $55,000 with the colt reoffered at the Karaka Premier Sale, fetching $170,000.
  • At Karaka 2013, a Curraghmore weanling graduate by Thewayyouare sold for $200,000 after being purchased for $61,000 as a weanling.
  • The previous year saw a $90,000 Curraghmore Savabeel weanling knocked down for $240,000 at the Karaka Premier Sale.

Ascot Farm’s Bruce & Maureen Harvey are no strangers to success in the pinhooking game either.

  • Ascot Farm purchased a Makfi weanling colt from Curraghmore Stud who returned them a $115,000 profit.
  • A colt by Savabeel also returned them a healthy dividend, selling for $50,000 more than his purchase price as a weanling.
  • In 2012 the Cambridge based operation sold a Savabeel colt for $270,000 having purchased him at the National Weanling Sale for a mere $42,500.

The 2014 Karaka Select Sale was the source of a number of success stories including the largest profit made from a pinhook from last year’s Weanling Sale:

  • A colt by Thewayyouare returned his vendors $136,000 profit when he fetched $150,000 for Goodwood Stud, after being purchased for only $14,000 as a weanling.
  • A colt by first season sire Showcasing was sold for $130,000 which was $87,000 more than his weanling purchase price.
  • Proving that a small outlay as a weanling can reward the daring with good rewards was a filly by Pins purchased for $9,000 that went on to sell for $75,000 as a yearling.

Buyers can note that a strong mixture of proven and young sires provided highly successful pinhooks through the National Weanling Sale:

  • Leading sires Fastnet Rock, Savabeel and Pins provided substantial profits through their progeny.
  • Second crop sire Thewayyouare and first crop sires Makfi and Showcasing also rewarding pinhookers with a strong yield.

Buyers will have 284 opportunities at this year’s Sale to find the next sale ring star with that number of weanlings catalogued for the first day of the National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka (12 & 13 May).

The Sale also features broodmares, yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced horses, horses-in-training, racehorses and stallion shares going under auction on the second day of selling.
