Fillies Get Set for New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas

13 October 2004

The second leg of the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series, the Group 3 Indian Danehill Lowland Stakes, took place at Hastings at the weekend when Masterton Racing Club's meeting was moved from Trentham. Despite the move the track conditions were still soft with a 3.9 penetrometer reading.

Despite track conditions causing four scratchings including the Mike Moroney & Andrew Scott trained duo Eloa and Clean Sweep, who quinellaed the first race in the series, the feature made for exciting racing.

A beautifully timed ride by Vinny Colgan saw Justa Tad (Istidaad x Infinity) take second round honours for Takanini trainer Rudy Leifting. A late rally saw the filly nab victory from a game Roger James trained La Sizeranne (Stravinsky x Tricia Ann) who challenged wide before the turn and stuck on bravely. Race favourite Sista (Magic Of Sydney x Blister) got home late for third.

The point standing following the second race is:

Eloa 6
Justa Tad 6
Clean Sweep 3
La Sizeranne 3
Sheka 1.5
Sista 1.5

The next race in the series is the New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas at Riccarton Park on 6 November. All the current points holders are nominated for the Guineas.
