New Horses-in-Training Session Debuts at Karaka

12 April 2011

A new Horses-in-Training session will form a feature part of New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale this May, with a quality selection of 50 racehorses set to go under the hammer.

The Horses-in-Training session is the newest initiative from New Zealand Bloodstock specifically targeted at providing a viable trading opportunity for horses currently in work. Each horse in the session must have raced, trialled or breezed up for the NZB Ready to Run Sale in the current season, and each entry is accompanied by a video of its track performance on the NZB website.

The May Sale has already had good success on the track. Graduates include Nacho Man who won the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, Barside who won this season's Group 2 Wellington Guineas and Lord Pyrus who won the Group 3 Carlyon Cup at Caulfield in early February this year.

The new Horses-in-Training session will be looking to build on this success with its strong line-up of entries providing some significant opportunities for those looking to couple racing interests with future breeding prospects.

Haunui Farm has two entries in the new session, including a highlight at Lot 396. Already a high achiever on the track, the son of Sadler's Wells - Doctor Fremantle (e x Summer Breeze, by Rainbow Quest) - is a four-time stakeswinner including in the Group 2 Newmarket Princess of Wales's Stakes. The entire also ran fourth in the Group 1 English Derby and Group 1 Longchamp Grand Prix de Paris.

From a performing family, Doctor Fremantle is from a full sister to the champion Group 1 winners Raintrap and Sunshack, and also to the dam of Group 1 winners Meteor Storm and Polish Summer.

Also among the host of top racing and broodmare prospects to be offered is the mare Glamorous Girl (Thorn Park x J'Lo) from the Seaton Park draft at Lot 399. A well performed filly on the track, she has earned over $130,000 in stakes and won the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes as a three-year-old, beating the Group 1 AJC Oaks and Group 1 Windsor Park Plate winner Daffodil.

Curraghmore Stud had a standout draft at last year's May Sale, including the top priced weanling colt and filly. This year in addition to 13 weanling entries, Curraghmore Stud will be offering an excellent opportunity at Lot 405 with the Darci Brahma two-year-old Karaka Jack (ex Wave to Lottie).

Having already shown ability on the track, Karaka Jack has now won two of his trials, beating the likes of Queen Boudicca who ran a brave sixth in the hotly contested Karaka Million. Well-bred, Karaka Jack is a half-brother to the Group 1 winning mare Veloce Bella.

Volksraad - New Zealand's Champion Sire on seven occasions - has two entries in this session including Lot 418 from Letham Thoroughbreds. Hailing from the family of Soliloquy, the two-year-old colt's dam is a half-sister to the Group 3 winning filly Solvini, the same family as the Group 1 winners Culminate, Eileen Dubh and Captivate.

The Volksraad gelding has already shown that he has ability on the track, winning two of his trials and in the process beating the smart colt Brackenwood who has since won twice at the races and is stakes placed.

Other entries in the Horses-in-Training session include:

Half-siblings to Group winners Divine Rebel (Lot 386 by Pentire), Keep the Passion (Lot 388 by Traditionally), Chant (Lot 392 by Traditionally), The Mighty Lions (Lot 410 by Duelled), Bird of Fire (Lot 413 by Volksraad) and Hume (Lot 403 by Dubawi)

 15 individual race winners

 7 trial winners

Representation by such sires as Captain Rio, Darci Brahma, Don Eduardo, Faltaat, Flying Spur, Fusaichi Pegasus, No Excuse Needed, Pins, Pentire, Red Ransom, Rock of Gibraltar, savabeel, Snippetson, Stratum, Thorn Park and Volksraad.

The first major pedigree update has already been registered for this session, with Picturesque at Lot 419 now a half-sister to a stakes winner, with Platinum Princess (Keeper) winning the Listed South Island Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes.
