New Record Average & Median at Opening Session of Karaka Select Sale

It has been a strong opening session of the 2007 Karaka Select Sale, with a new record average�and median posted after completion of the first day of the three-day session.
Of the 131 lots catalogued, 98 were sold for an average currently breaking previous records at NZ$49,301. Most telling of the strength of this Select session is the median price which, at NZ$40,000, exceeds both last year's median of $30,000, and last year's final Select session average of NZ$34,687. Combined with a very healthy clearance rate of 83.7%, the figures are showing a distinct strength to the Select Sale market.
New Zealand Bloodstock Head Auctioneer, Joe Walls, commented, "From the rostrum this Sale felt as strong as any we have witnessed at Karaka. There was spirited bidding right from the outset and, while we are less than a third of the way through the Select Sale,�the buyer confidence shown over the Premier Sale was clearly evidenced and should continue to flow throughout this session."
The top lot of the day was Lot 542, a colt by Lucky Owners from O'Reilly mare, Bright Beauty, consigned by Trelawney Stud on behalf of Joan Egan. The colt was bought by prominent Australian bloodstock agent, Kieran Moore, for NZ$170,000. In all, eight lots�have already been�sold for more than NZ$100,000, with just eight six-figure lots from the entire Select session in 2006.
The leading buyer is currently West Australia bloodstock agent, John Chalmers, who has purchased six lots for NZ$281,500. His top price is NZ$65,000 for Lot 478, a Volksraad filly out of Zabeel mare, Zambria, from Esker Lodge.
Also active on the Select Sale buyers sheets on Day One are local buyers Michael Stedman, Paul O'Sullivan, Graeme Rogerson, John Wheeler and Dean Hawthorne.
