New Zealand Fillies on Fire in Australia

20 April 2009

Daffodil's Group 1 AJC Oaks success in Sydney capped a memorable day for New Zealand across Australia with Karaka graduates scoring at stakes level in South Australia and Brisbane.

The Group 2 Queen of the South Stakes (1600m) was won by Karaka Select Sale graduate Bird of Fire (Stravinsky - You Beauty, by Comet Shine) by a commanding two and a half length margin.

Trained by Tony Vasil the daughter of Stravinsky is now the winner of two Group 2 races, her other being the Group 2 VRC Matriarch Stakes which she won during Victoria's Spring Carnival. Carrying a massive 58.5kg to victory on this occasion Bird of Fire has now won five races from 1400m to 2000m.

Now a four year old, Bird of Fire is the first foal of Group 1 NZ Oaks placegetter You Beauty who herself raced in Australia finishing unplaced in the Group 1 AJC Oaks. Esker Lodge sold You Beauty's chestnut daughter as a yearling in 2006 where she was purchased for $40,000 by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock.

Three mares by the versatile Stravinsky will be offered at NZB's National Weanling, Broodmare, and Mixed Bloodstock Sale on 4, 5, and 6 May.

These include:
