Successful Broodmare Sires Take Centre Stage at Karaka

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare, and Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka on May 4, 5, and 6 is set to offer an abundance of broodmare opportunities, 323 in total,� by sires who have proven themselves on the racetrack to be outstanding dam-sires.

Centaine (AUS)

Leading both the New Zealand and Australian Broodmare Sire List's this season is the infallible Centaine (Century). The ill-fated Waikato Stud-based sire can lay claim to three Group 1 winners this season including Group 1 Doncaster Handicap winner Vision and Power (Carnegie), Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Alamosa (O'Reilly), and dual Group 1 winner MacO'Reilly (O'Reilly).

The sire of 61 stakes winners, Centaine's daughters have already left 77 stakes winners including 17 Group 1 winners. He has been crowned New Zealand's leading broodmare sire over the past three years, while in Australia he has not finished out of the top ten over the past five years and is on course to land the title for the first time this season.

Centaine is represented by eight daughters at Karaka in May including:

Lot 371 - Irish Eyes 1999 (Centaine - Cinzano, by Lord Ballina) - Belvedere Farm

��������� Her sire and dam sires read Centaine - Lord Ballina - Sound Reason, and she is a direct descendent of Bourbon Lass, as is this season's Group 1 VRC Oaks place getter Miss Scarlatti (Stravinsky).

Lot 455 - Porshe 1996 (Centaine - Victoria Tan, by Vice Regal) - Waikato Stud

��������� Porshe has already left two smart gallopers in Tear 'n' Triumph (O'Reilly), the winner of seven and placed in the Listed Kilmore Cup, and Boxapins (Pins) a winner of two.

��������� Hailing from Mary Poppins, Porshe is sold with an early service to Group 1 Cox Plate winner Savabeel. LSD 3-10-2008.

Lot 653 - Flying Florence 2001 (Centaine - Falcons Fire, by Kaapstad) - Dormello Stud

��������� A winner at two, Flying Florence is the dam of Richard Collett's exciting 2YO Poetic Music (Stravinsky), a winner of the $100,000 Carnival Bonus at her first start this season.

��������� This young mare is sold with an early positive test to Dormello's Group 2 winning son of Redoute's Choice in Duelled.

Danehill

�Danehill (USA)

Like Centaine in New Zealand, internationally successful Danehill (Danzig) has dominated the Australian Broodmare Sire Premiership over the past three years. This season he currently sits just A$30,000 off Centaine's total prize-money with his leading money earner and sole Group 1 winner being Tuesday Joy (Danehill).

Danehill has amassed 102 stakes winners as a broodmare sire, 21 of these at the elite Group 1 level including this season's Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Thoroughbred Breeder's Stakes winner Dane Julia (Caesour).

Five Danehill mares will be presented for sale at the National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale. These include:

Lot 494 - Star 1993 (Danehill - Desirable, by Without Fear) - Trelawney Stud

��������� Star has the perfect record of four foals to race for four winners including seven time winner Sendeed (Montjeu) who placed in the Listed Thomas Elder Stakes.

��������� She is from brilliant sprinter Desirable, the winner of the Group 1 VRC and AJC Sires Produce Stakes, along with the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and Group 2 Lightning Stakes.

Lot 636 - Entrancement 2003 (Danehill - Magical Moment, by Sadler's Wells) - Curraghmore Stud

��������� A $600,000 yearling, Entrancement is certainly a good type of mare from an international family that includes Dansili's Group 1 winner Zambezi Sun. Her dam by Sadler's Wells has already left this season's Group 3 Waikato Guineas place-getter Fear's Nothing (Faltaat).

��������� Entrancement is sold in-foal to Group 1 winning 2YO One Cool Cat. LSD 7-10-2008.

zabeel

Danehill's biggest rival on Southern Hemisphere racetracks has always been Cambridge Stud's prolific Zabeel (Sir Tristram), a phenomenal middle distance and staying influence on the thoroughbred breed.

Currently sitting third on the Australian Broodmare sire list, after finishing fourth the previous four years, Zabeel in his broodmare sire role has left two outstanding Group 1 winning 3YO fillies this season highlighted by Group 1 Flight Stakes and Group 1 VRC Oaks winner Samantha Miss (Redoute's Choice), who sold for a record broodmare price of A$3.85 million recently.

He is also the sire of Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes winner Purple (Commands) this season, taking his total number of Group 1 winners as a broodmare sire to 10.

Six Zabeel mares will go under the hammer at Karaka in May. These include:

Lot 353 - Gypsy Moth 1996 (Zabeel - Round the World, by Sea Anchor) - Belvedere Farm

��������� A four time winner herself, Gypsy Moth placed in the Group 3 ARC Grandeur Stakes. She is a daughter of Group 1 Queensland Oaks winner Round the World who has left three foals to race for three winners including Listed winner Grandmaster.

��������� Gypsy Moth's yearlings have sold up to $190,000 in the sale ring and she is sold in foal to Group 1 sire Keeper, with the resulting foal being bred on the same Danzig-Zabeel cross as half of Zabeel's 10 Group 1 winners as a broodmare sire, including Darci Brahma, Samantha Miss, and Purple. Lot 547 - Zinder Bella 2003 (Zabeel - Cinder Bella, by Victory Dance) - Belvedere Farm

��������� Zinder Bella is the first foal of the outstanding dual Group 1 winner Cinder Bella. She is a direct descendent of Birthright (Rego), a winner of the Group 2 Maribyrnong Plate and a sister to Champion 2YO Baguette.

��������� She too carries a foal bred on the successful Danehill-Zabeel cross with a service to Lucky Unicorn. LSD 25-10-2008.

Rory's Jester

�Rory's Jester (AUS)

Rory's Jester (Crown Jester) is having a marvelous season as a broodmare sire, sitting in position five and seven respectively on the Australian and New Zealand Broodmare Sires Table. Known for his quick maturing qualities, Rory's Jester is a name synonymous with speed and precocity and his record as a broodmare sire reflects this also.

Of his six Group 1 winners as a dam sire, three have won Group 1 races at two, while another placed. These include two Group 1 winning 2YO's of this season, Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce and Karaka Million winner The Heckler (Lucky Owners), and Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward for Effort (Exceed and Excel).

Lot 635 - Enlightening 1996 (Rory's Jester - Worlds Away, by Bluebird) - Bluegables Farm

��������� Twice Listed placed, Enlightening won three races, her dam won four races and was Group 3 placed, and her grand-dam won three races also.

��������� She is sold carrying as service to Lucky Unicorn, with the resulting foal bred on the same Danehill-Rory's Jester cross that produced both The Heckler and Reward for Effort. LSD 10-11-2008.

Lot 467 - Red Carrera 1997 (Rory's Jester - Marbecca, by Marscay) - Twin Pines

��������� Red Carrera is a direct descendent of Group 2 winner Bellition (Bellborough) through Group 1 placed grand-dam Red Rebecca (Showdown), and Group placed dam Marbecca (Marscay).

��������� A winner of two and Listed placed herself; Red Carrera is sold in foal to young Group winning Danehill stallion Hawkeye. LSD 4-12-2008.

O'Reilly

�O'Reilly (NZ)

Making a cracking start to his broodmare sire career is Waikato Stud's O'Reilly. His broodmare daughters have left a mesmerising 78 runners, 53 winners (68% winners to runners), and seven stakes winners (9% stakes winners to runners) including two at the highest level, last weekend's Group 1 AJC Oaks winner Daffodil (No Excuse Needed) and Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas winner The Pooka (Tobougg).

Five of his seven stakes winners have run fourth or better at the elite Group 1 level, and his father, Last Tycoon, is represented by six Group 1 winners this season alone including Roman Emperor (Montjeu), Jungle Rocket (Jungle Pocket), Typhoon Tracey (Red Ransom), Inspiration (Flying Spur), Sousa (Galileo) and Markus Maximus (Pentire).

O'Reilly is represented by two mares at Karaka in May:

��������� Grey in colour, Maggie O'Reilly is out of Group placed 2YO Habaine, herself a daughter of Group placed Habania.

Lot 538 - Wisteria Lane 2002 (O'Reilly - Auchtric, by Antic Boy) - Twin Pines

��������� Young Wisteria Lane is a daughter of good Listed winning sprinter Auchtric, the dam of five named foals, four winners including Aukay (Towkay).

��������� She is sold in foal to Group 1 NZ Derby winner St Reims, an exciting young stud prospect who is a full relation to Champagne. LSD 17-10-2008.
