NWB Sale Broodmare Preview

With the four-day National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka just one week away, interest is building around the broodmare stock catalogued for sale.

This year sees a total of 357 broodmares catalogued, including over 100 mares to be offered by Westbury Stud as part of their unreserved sale on Friday 6th May. The mares in the main session will be offered from the afternoon of Monday 9th May.

The selection of broodmare sires is extensive and includes such sires as Bletchingly, Centaine, Crested Wave, Danasinga, Danehill, Entrepreneur, Grosvenor, Kaapstad, Last Tycoon, Nassipour, O'Reilly, Pentire, Pins, Pompeii Court, Rory's Jester, Sir Tristram, Star Way, Straight Strike, Woodman and Zabeel.

Of particular interest will be the first season covering sires represented. These include:

Al Jadeed
By Coronado's Quest, he is a Group 2 winner who is closely related to champion sire AP Indy and successful sire Summer Squall. This is also the family of champion sire, Raja Baba.

Captain Rio
A top performer at two and three in Europe, in a season with one of the strongest crops of juveniles seen for decades. By successful European sire, Pivotal, sire of 28 individual stakeswinners, his standout performance was an 8 length win in the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons Lafitte. He now stands at Westbury Stud.

Chianti
A�multiple Group performer by sire of sires, Danehill, and from Nureryev mare, Saabaah, he is a beautifully bred brother to the sire of Makybe Diva, Desert King.

Danroad
Another newcomer by Danehill, Danroad was a talented sprinter and Group 2 winner at two. He ran second to Grout in in the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce over 1400m. Danroad also stands at Westbury Stud.

Ekraar
A Group 1 performer in five countries and Group 1 winner over 2400m in Europe, he also ran second in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase. By Red Ransom, he is from the Group 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner in Sacahuista and is a half brother to successful sire, Hussonet. Ekraar stands at Stoney Bridge stallion station.

Elusive City
Champion French 2YO and Group 1 winner over 1200m. He is by successful US sire Elusive Quality, the sire of Kentucky Derby winner, Smarty Jones, and from the family of triple Group 1 winner, Coup De Fusil. Elusive City stands at Trelawney Stud.

Occidental Tourist
By Gone West, he is a US winner from the family of champion sire, Green Desert, and promising up-and-coming sire, Bertolini. He is also closely related to successful sire, Arch. He stands at Java Lodge.

Spartacus
Dual Group 1 winner in Europe at two, including the Curragh Phoenix Stakes. By Danehill, he is full brother to the winner of the Hong Kong Derby, Johan Cruyff, and closely related to successful sire, Conquistarose. Spartacus stands at The Oaks Stud.

Thorn Park
By Spinning World he is the winner of the Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap and five other Australian Group races. He stands at Windsor Park Stud.

Lot 197: Ruby Turner (Deputy Governor): Included in the Westbury Stud unreserved sale is a full sister to Singapore Horse of the Year, Zirna, Ruby Turner is from Gleam Machine mare, Riverly Lass. Dam of recent winner in Hong Kong, Har Har Charms (by Green Perfume).

Lot 400: Mi Babe (Mi Preferido): Stakes winning mare and Group 1 placed, Mi Babe is by US sire, MI PREFERIDO, winner of the Gr.1 Santa Anita San Felipe H. Dam of one foal to race, a four time winner by Danasinga. Mi Babe is believed to be in foal to Danasinga.

Lot 403: Milzeel (Zabeel): By champion sire, ZABEEL, the damsire of 14 stakes winners, and from McGinty mare, MILTAK, a triple Group 1 winner including the Gr.1 BMW Stakes. Milzeel is a stakes placed mare being sold as a breeding and racing proposition.

Lot 413: Motee (by Hopeful Word): Four-time winner in the USA, Motee is a half sister to CLAXTON'S SLEW, dam of USA Champion 4YO+ Filly, ESCENA, and Group winners HUMBEL and SHOWLADY. Motee is believed to be in foal to Stravinsky.

Lot 414: Mynzawine (by Jetball): Group winning mare herself and half sister to group winner, DABEER ZAHEER. From the family of (LORD) WOBURN. Mynzawine is believed to be in foal to Danasinga.

Lot 447: Sabbia Bay (by J. O. Dahlia): Winner at 1600m, her dam is a three-quarter sister to RICHEBOURG, dam of GRAND ECHEZEAUX and ROMANEE CONTI (dam of ETHEREAL). She is a half sister to Gr.1 BMW winner, STONY BAY. Sabbia Bay is believed to be in foal to Pentire.

Lot 449: Satin Pillows (by Dunmaani): Race winning mare and half sister to Gr.1 Caulfield Cup winner, FRAAR. Satin Pillows is believed to be in foal to first season covering sire, Elusive City.

Lot 476: Surfin Bird (by Crested Wave): A half sister to LEGGINGS (Tights) she is the dam of seven foals to race, all winners including Listed winner, Getty, and promising youngster in Hong Kong, Classa Victory. Surfin Bird is believed to be in foal to first crop sire, Van Nistelrooy.

Lot 497: Wusool (by Gulch): Out of South African champion 3YO filly, PETRAVA (Imposing), Wusool is a half-sister to triple Group 1 winner and 2001 South African champion 3YO filly, HOEBERG. Wusool is believed to be in foal to Pins.

Lot 559: Dopff (Tights): 8 wins from 1300m to 1900m, including a Group 2 win, Dopff is a half sister to two stakes performers in RIZON and WHITFORD HILL. She is carrying a filly by Elusive City.

Lot 563: Ecole (by Western Symphony): Dual winner and sister to PROCOL HARUM (winner of Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas), and half-sister to LIBRICI (winner of Gr.1 Queensland Derby), BEACHSIDE (Gr.2 Wakeful Stakes), and DOUBLE TAKE. Ecole is believed to be in foal to St Petersburg.

Lot 592: Grovana (by Imperial Seal): From NZ Filly of the Year, IMPASADA, Grovana is the winner of seven and stakes placed. She is believed to be in foal to Black Minnaloushe.

Lot 632: Ladystaci (Lanfranco): Winner at 2100m, out of Eustaci (Sir Trsitram) she is a half sister to Group 1 winners SIRSTACI, NIMUE and SMILING LIKE. Ladystaci is not in foal.

Mixed Bloodstock

With a total of 919 horses catalogued for sale over four days, this Sale will also see 323 weanlings, 28 yearlings, 16 untried horses, 16 racehorses, 7 two year olds and 2 stallion shares offered in the main sale.

The Westbury Stud draft will be available for viewing from Wednesday 4th May at Karaka. The Sale will be conducted on Friday 6th May from 10am. A total of 272 horses are catalogued in this unreserved mixed bloodstock sale.

The National Weanling Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale will commence at 10am on 8th May and will continue on 9th and 10th May at Karaka.
