Zabeel Mare Tops Winter Mixed Sale

3 August 2012

The Zabeel mare Be Inspired provided the highlight of the day at New Zealand Bloodstock's Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale, being knocked down for $100,000.

A sister to Group 3 winner Rainbow Styling and half-sister to Group 3 winner Zingaling (Redoute's Choice), Be Inspired at Lot 8 was purchased by Sam Munro of Mercer based Jamieson Park.

Offered by Curraghmore Stud, Be Inspired has been served by the Group 2 winning English sprinter Showcasing who will see his first southern hemisphere foals born this season.

The fact that Be Inspired's Duporth colt topped the first day of the Weanling session at this year's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, when purchased by Lyndhurst Farm for $105,000, caught Sam's attention.

"He was part of the reason we bought her as we could see she has thrown good types," said Sam. That and the fact that she is by Zabeel and she is a premier mare drew us to her and we are pleased to have got her.

"We also liked her covering sire, Showcasing, and we plan for her to go to a proven sire, possibly O'Reilly."

Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud ended the day as the leading vendor by aggregate, selling three horses for $175,500 and was also the leading vendor by average (for two or more horses sold) with an average of $58,500.

Blue-blooded mare Shutout at Lot 74 was the second highest Lot of the Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale, purchased by Michael Otto Bloodstock from Curraghmore Stud for $75,000. A daughter of the champion sire Redoute's Choice, she is from the Group 2 Winter Stakes winning mare La Sizeranne (Stravinsky) and has raced just six times for a win and two placings.

After 106 catalogued lots, 70 horses have sold for $438,800 at an average of $6,269 and clearance rate of 83%, up 28% on last year's clearance of 65%.

All attention now turns to the South Island Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Mixed Bloodstock which will be held next Friday August 10 at Canterbury Agricultural Park from 11am.
