Precocious Karaka graduate Gift Of Power (NZ) (Power) kept her unbeaten record intact when she scored a tough win in the $100,000 Group 2 Wellington Seamarket Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1100m) at Trentham on Saturday.

Rider Craig Grylls positioned the filly in third place through the early stages of the race before surging through along the inside at the top of the straight. She faced a formidable late challenge from fellow Karaka graduate Hashalo (NZ) (Savabeel), but held on to win by a nose.

“She travelled really well and she had a good look around and got a bit lost, but when the other horse came at her she dug in,” Grylls said, “She got the bob in and she’s developing all the time.”

Bred by Cambridge Stud’s Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, the filly comes from the first southern hemisphere crop of shuttle stallion Power. She was offered by Cambridge Stud at the 2016 Premier Sale, where trainers Team Rogerson bought her for $180,000.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled, she’s a lovely filly,” said Sir Patrick Hogan, who retained a share in the ownership. “Power is doing marvellously well in the northern hemisphere and it’s good to see him going so well here.”

Gift Of Power has now had three starts for three wins and $93,750 in stakes. She is out of Capital Diamond (NZ) (Lucky Unicorn), who was placed in four stakes events including the Group 1 1000 Guineas (1600m).

Runner-up Hasahalo was bought by owners Go Racing for $110,000 at the 2016 Premier Sale. She also has a full-sister catalogued for the 2017 Premier Sale.
