12 New Sires Showcased at Karaka Weanling Sale

One of the highlights of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling Sale will be the 12 freshman sires making their sale ring debut at Karaka on 12 May.

Amongst the selection of new season sires represented by weanlings from their eldest southern hemisphere crops are Cape Blanco, Dalghar, Echoes of Heaven, Gio Ponti, Jimmy Choux, Pluck, Poet’s Voice, Pour Moi, Redwood, Trusting, Uncle Mo and Zacinto.

CAPE BLANCO (Galileo):

Standing at Cambridge Stud, he is the son of one of the most influential sires in the world currently in Galileo.  He enjoyed a stellar racing career, winning five Group 1 races in Ireland and America including the Irish Derby.

A strong selection of eight weanlings by Cape Blanco are catalogued in the Sale, including a half-brother to Group 1 winner Shootoff (Lot 239), a daughter of Australian Group 3 winner Just Polite (Lot 42) and the second foal of dual Listed winner Tip the Wink (Lot 193).

DALGHAR (Anabaa):

The son of successful dual hemisphere sire Anabaa was bred and raced by His Highness the Aga Khan and is a half-brother to multiple Group 1 winners and successful sires Daylami and Dalakhani. He was an exceptionally quick horse, winning the Group 3 Prix du Palais-Royal at Longchamp in a blistering time of 1:17.4.

Six weanlings by the Brighthill Stud stallion are entered in the Sale, headlined by Lot 73, a son of Group 1 winner Macavelli Miss, along with a half-brother to Listed two-year-old winner Napatap (Lot 129) and a half-brother to dual Group 3 winner Coup Bloomsbury (Lot 219) and three other stakes placegetters.

ECHOES OF HEAVEN (Encosta de Lago):

The exceptionally bred son of Encosta de Lago is a half-brother to champion sire Redoute’s Choice, a full-brother to Group 1 winner and young sire Manhattan Rain and a three-quarter brother to the highly promising two-year-old Rubick.

The sire standing at Linwood Park has five weanlings catalogued in the Sale including Lot 31 who is out of a half-sister to Dubai stakes winner Al Maali and is from the family of Group 1 winner Istadaad.

GIO PONTI (Tale of the Cat):

A seven-time Group 1 winner in America, Gio Ponti also claimed three Eclipse Awards as the Champion US Older Male and twice Champion US Male Turf Horse. The former Arrowfield Stud shuttle sire has one weanling in the Sale, a filly out of Tantrum who is a daughter of Group 2 placegetter Tantamount from the influential family of Soliloquy, catalogued at Lot 183.

JIMMY CHOUX (Thorn Park):

New Zealand Horse of the Year Jimmy Choux won five Group 1 races in a stellar career on both sides of the Tasman. The Champion Australasian 3YO of his year won four Group 1 races in New Zealand, plus the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas and a second-placing in the Group 1 Cox Plate in Australia.

A strong selection of 11 progeny from the Rich Hill Stud sire are catalogued in the Sale including Lot 106, a half-sister to multiple stakes placegetter Shining Light, Lot 227, a half-sister to dual stakes placegetter Batman,and Lot 242, out of eight-time winner and Listed placegetter Bankside Belle.

PLUCK (More Than Ready):

A brilliant winner of Group 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in the US, by powerhouse two-year-old sire More Than Ready. The Vinery Stud sire has one horse catalogued in the Sale, Lot 169 from the family of Group 1 winner Stella Cadente.

POET’S VOICE (Dubawi):

Darley’s Group 1 winner Poet’s Voice claimed victory over Rip Van Winkle and Makfi in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot. By successful dual hemisphere sire Dubawi, Poet’s Voice has one horse catalogued in the Sale at Lot 284, a colt from the family of Group 1 winner Lunar Sovereign.

POUR MOI (Montjeu):

Group 1 Epsom Derby winner in England for Coolmore, Pour Moi is by champion sire Montjeu who has been a successful sire in both hemispheres. Standing at Windsor Park Stud, Pour Moi is a three-quarter sister to Group 3 winner Gagnoa, a three-time Group 1 placegetter.

Among the four weanlings catalogued in the Sale by Pour Moi is Lot 158, a colt out of Group 2, Group 3 and Listed placegetter Shining Light.

REDWOOD (High Chaparral):

An international Group 1 performing son of superstar sire High Chaparral – the sire of NZ’s dual hemisphere champion So You Think – Redwood was the winner of the Group 1 Woodbine Northern Dancer Turf Stakes and was Group 1 placed in Hong Kong and Dubai.

The Westbury Stud sire has 10 weanlings in the Sale including one of the most anticipated offerings, Lot 114, a colt out of dual Group 3 winner Palos Verdes making this weanling a half-brother to four time Group 1 winner and Cox Plate hero El Segundo.

TRUSTING (Tale of the Cat):

The consistent triple Group 2 winning son of speed sire Tale of the Cat was placed no less than five times at Group 1 level. The Patinack Farm sire has a sole entry in the Sale catalogued at Lot 9, out of Flying Spur mare Flying Rose who is the daughter of Listed winner Rosarino.

UNCLE MO (Indian Charlie):

The Champion 2YO Colt in the US, Uncle Mo won two Group 1 races as a two-year-old including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Standing at Coolmore Australia, Uncle Mo has one weanling in the Sale catalogued at Lot 91, a filly out of Miss Cosimo who is a half-sister to triple Group 1 winner Bentley Biscuit.

ZACINTO (Dansili):

A Group 2 winner as a three-year-old, the son of Dansili went on to finish second to Rip Van Winkle in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Royal Ascot. Standing at Inglewood Stud, Zacinto received strong support in his first season at stud and has four weanlings in the Sale.

Among his progeny at the Sale is a colt out of Go To School (Lot 20) who is a half-sister to Australian stakes winner Swiss Rose,and a filly out of Evvia, a daughter of Group 2 winner For Love who is the dam of current stakes performer Beyond Desire.

Also of interest will be mares in foal to one of the nine sires that stood their first season at stud last year.

Recently retired local sires include Darci Brahma’s three-quarter-brother Burgandy (Redoute’s Choice), Group 1 placegetter He’s Remarkable (Pentire), Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas winner Rock ‘n’ Pop (Fastnet Rock) and New Zealand’s reigning Horse of the Year Ocean Park (Thorn Park), a five-time Group 1 winner and Cox Plate champion.

Strong Australian form is represented through Group 2 Ajax Stakes winner Niagara (Encosta de Lago) and Group 1 Queen Elizabeth winner Reliable Man (Dalahkani) with their much anticipated first crops due this year.

International flavour is added through the likes of proven Northern Hemisphere Group 1 sire Azamour (Night Shift) and dual Group 1 winner in Ireland Power (Oasis Dream) along with New Zealand-bred dual Singapore Horse of the Year Super Easy (Darci Brahma).

The National Weanling Sale is the first session of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka on 12 & 13 May. The 284 weanlings catalogued will go under the hammer on one action-packed day of selling commencing at 10am on Monday 12 May.

The second day of the Sale (Tuesday 13 May) features broodmares, yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced horses, horses-in-training, racehorses and stallion shares going under auction.
