Proven and Up-and-Coming Sire Feature at NZB’s National Weanling Sale

The upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale gives purchasers the opportunity to secure weanlings by a strong line-up of 71 stallions.

Highlighting the National Weanling Sale is the chance to acquire a selection of progeny by New Zealand’s current leading sires, Savabeel, Darci Brahma, Pins, Iffraaj and O’Reilly.

New Zealand’s current leading sire Savabeel is relishing in his most successful season as a sire, his progeny accumulating beyond $2 million in earnings this season alone.

His Group 1 performing contributors this season include Pasadena Girl, recent winner the Group 1 Champagne Stakes, Lucia Valentina winner the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, Soriano,winner of the Group 1 Zabeel Classic, Costume,winner of the Group 1 Livamol Classic, Diademe, winner of the Group 1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes and Savaria,this year’s Group 1 New Zealand Oaks winners.

Savabeel will be represented in the National Weanling Sale by just one weanling filly, Lot 192, out of an O’Reilly mare Vespolina, who is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Vouvray and Listed winner Bolton.

Darci Brahma, a son of the great Danehill, has also produced a fruitful season on both sides of the Tasman with his most recent high-stakes performer Gust Of Wind (NZ), who wasvictorious in the Group 1 Australian Oaks.

Among his draft of five weanlings is a colt out of a half-sister to Group 3 winner Zino Belle,who is the dam of stakes winner Silver Eclipse (Lot 62), and Lot 105, a filly out of stakes-winning mare Princess Annaliese, a half-sister to stakes-winner Gondorff.

The winner of all three NZ sire awards last year was O’Reilly. The Waikato Stud sire has a well-rounded representation of weanlings (6), yearlings (2) and broodmares (10). Among O’Reilly’s weanlings entered is Lot 73, whose dam is stakes winner Neversaynever, and Lot 263, a filly out of dual stakes winning mare Classic Clare.

Among the Champion Sire’s broodmare selection is Lot 447 who is a half-sister to the winner of the Group 2 Championship Stakes The Lions Roar (dam of two stakes winners) and is believed to be in foal Showcasing.

Dual stakes-winning O’Reilly mare Ombre Rose is catalogued at Lot 454. She is the dam of one named foal, Room for Excuse, a winner and stakes performer in Singapore.

Up-and-coming sire Tavistock has made a strong start to his career with stakes winners in both New Zealand and Australia. With his oldest progeny only three-year-old’s Tavistock is the sire of this season’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas winner Volkstok’n’barrel (NZ).

Standing at Cambridge Stud, Tavistock has 10 weanlings catalogued for Sale including Lot 28, a filly out of Australian stakes performer Like Me Wild, and Lot 213, a colt out of a half-sister to Group 1 winner Vonusti.

Two young sires, Showcasing and Per Incanto, head NZ’s Leading 2YO Sires list and NZ’s First Season Sire list through the success of National Weanling Sale graduates.

This year’s $1m Karaka Million winner Hardline (NZ) (Showcasing) has propelled his sire to the top of both lists with the aid of fellow Sale graduate Showboy (NZ) (Showcasing), winner of the Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes. Another Sale graduate Rocanto (NZ) (Per Incanto), winner of the Listed Matamata Slipper Stakes, has helped place Per Incanto into second spot on both lists.

Haunui Farm’s Showcasing has one of the largest drafts in the National Weanling Sale of 15, including Lot 160 who is out of stakes-winner Sokool, winner of the Group 3 Gasmate Stakes, and Lot 164 whose dam is Starina, a placegetter in the Group 1 Sydney Cup.

Little Avondale Stud sire Per Incanto is already the sire of a Group 1 winner Dal Cielo, winner of the Group 1 Diamond Stakes, and has also had stakes success with Rocanto, a dual Group 1 placegetter.

Per Incanto has a draft of seven weanlings catalogued in the Sale, including a colt out of a half-sister to a stakes winner Squaw Dance (Lot 20), and a filly who is out of a half-sister to stakes winner Jasminka (Lot 165).

The largest draft in the National Weanling Sale is shared between freshman sire Rock’n’Pop and Zed, both with 18 lots catalogued. Standing at Waikato Stud, Rock ‘n’ Pop will have his first progeny sold at the Sale.

Among the 71 stallions are 11 sires showcasing their first crop in the southern hemisphere, including Azamour, Burgundy, He’s Remarkable, Niagara, Ocean Park, Pierro, Power, Reliable Man, Rock’n’Pop, Super Easy and Your Song. Click here to read more about freshman sires at the Sale.

A strong presence of Australian sires are entered in the National Weanling Sale with All American, Dash for Cash, Denman, Dreamscape, Equiano, Helmet, Manhattan Rain, Moshe, Nicconi, Pierro, Reset, So You Think, Toorak Toff, Wanted and Your Song.

New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale is on 11 – 13 May, commencing from 11am each day. The National Weanling Sale starts the Sale across the first two days, with the latter part of second day turning its attention to yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock and racehorses. The final day of the Sale will see the National Broodmare Sale take place followed by stallion shares to conclude the Sale.
